For more than three decades, ARC has been recognized globally for our detailed market analysis and unrivaled accuracy. ARC analysts monitor the key technologies, vertical industries, and regional trends impacting the global business environment on an ongoing basis. A case in point is the market for Alarm Management Systems

Alarm management refers to the effective design, implementation, operation, and maintenance of industrial manufacturing/process plant alarms. Alarm management is necessary in a process plant environment controlled by an operator using a control system, such as a DCS, or a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC). Alarms are triggered when the process value deviates from normal operating conditions, i.e., on the occurrence of abnormal operating situations. An abnormal situation occurs when a disturbance in a process causes plant operations to deviate from its normal operating state, calling for human intervention. The inability to diagnose and control abnormal situations has billions of dollar impact on the economy. Alarm management basically aims at preventing, or at least minimizing, physical and economic loss through operator intervention in response to the condition that was alarmed.

Based on the ISA standard (ANSI/ISA-18.2, 2016), “an alarm system is the collection of hardware and software that detects an alarm state, communicates the indication of that state to operators, and records changes in the alarm state.”

Alarm management is needed to ensure that operators are not presented with nuisance alarms or ones that obscure important events that require the operator’s immediate attention.  Alarm management continues to be a key issue in process plants, driven largely by the need to conform to current standards and best practices, like ISA 18.2, EEMUA 191, and IEC 62682.  The primary goal of these standards and practices is to develop a continuous improvement approach to alarm management and ease the alarm burden on operators so they only see the information they need to see, particularly during process upsets or other abnormal situations.
