Supply chain planning implementation and consulting can be provided by the SCP software suppliers, global consulting firms, or boutiques. ARC defines boutiques as companies that garner over 80 percent of their revenues implementing solutions in just one region (North America for this report), have over 50 percent coming from consulting around supply chain management (WMS, TMS, etc.), and at least 5 percent of their revenues coming from SCP implementations and consulting. The market is small because the boutiques keep getting acquired by the global consulting firms. When a global consulting firm can’t acquire a boutique, they have been known to lure over that firms’ top consultants, which at times has led to the demise of the firm.
"SCP software vendors bemoan these acquisitions. They find it much less bureaucratic to work with the boutiques and find many of the consultants from global consulting firms to be arrogant. For companies that want to engage a system integrator with the right skills, going to software vendor’s partner pages can be misleading. It is important to understand that a consulting firm that is listed as a Gold partner does not mean that the SI does more implementations of a particular supplier’s solution than a Silver or Bronze or even an integrator that is not even listed as a partner.
